The Swindon Shamrock CSC was set up in the year 2000 by a Glaswegian exile by the name of David Turnbull. He had been in Swindon since November 1999, he had noticed a demand for a Celtic Supporters Club in the town as there was a large numbers of Celtic fans turning up at the towns main Irish pub ‘The Tap & Barrel' many of which traveled regularly to Celtic matches up and down the country. The club started to form after a trip to Luton CSC; who were holding a Celtic festival. A bus was arranged to take the ‘bhoys' from Swindon. A questionnaire was handed out on the journey and it confirmed that there would be sufficient support for a Swindon based CSC, ironically only a handful of those originally on the bus joined the CSC, yet, the membership still reached a respectable 94 in the first few years.

The years to follow saw the club come on in leaps and bounds. The club moved to new premises as we felt it was necessary because the club did not receive full support from the landlady of the Tap & Barrel, we moved to the short 5 minute walk around the corner to the Whitehouse pub. A large screen was installed specifically for the clubs use and many members thought it may have even been stolen from Celtic Park itself due to the size of it, this rumour was not helped when Celtic Park was missing a large screen, thankfully it was only taken down by the club for repairs.

In terms of merchandise t-shirts, several styles of polo shirts, baseball caps fleece jackets and pin badges with the club's crest on it were produced and snapped up by many members and non-members alike. The club further proved its success by managing to get a top Celtic Band, Charlie & The Bhoys to come down to Swindon to play, we also had the Birmingham based Celtic DJ down to provide entertainment on several occasions. The clubs first full season ended with Martin O'Neil leading Celtic to a domestic treble and that memorable 6-2 demolition derby of Rangers. How sweet was that? The club resided at the Whitehouse for one more season but due to the losing of some members because of the attitude of the staff and the fact that they were in talks to demolish the pub to make way for flats. We were on the move again. The CSC had several options to move to a few pubs in the area, low and behold we found ourselves back in the Tap & Barrel. The landlord had decided to welcome us back with open arms leaving the wife a wee upset. He even sponsored the club to get a new 20ft x 14ft tri colour costing a healthy £460… but if you've seen it at Celtic Park you'll know it was money well spent. Soon the landlord and his soon to be ex-wife had sold up and new tenants came in after initial talks it was revealed they were still keen to have the club operate from the Tap, and if anything we now have even better communication and co-operation with the landlord and landlady and they have kindly agreed to allow the club to put its own CD in the jukebox meaning a wee singsong is certain after a live game.
